The IIP (Institute for Industrial Production) was
established in 1982. It emanated from the
then Institute for Manufacturing and Indus-
trial Science and Technical Economics group
of the University of Karlsruhe (TH). The DFIU
(German-French Institute for Environmental
Research) was founded in 1991 and has co-
operated closely with the IIP ever since. The
chair of energy economics (headed by Prof Dr.
W. Fichtner) at the IIP analyses techno-eco-
nomic issues along the entire energy value
chain, from primary energy production to en-
ergy conservation, energy transport, energy
distribution and use. The transport and energy
research group at the chair of energy econom-
ics examines the effects of electric vehicles on
energy systems and mass flows as well as user
acceptance in this field. These multifaceted re-
search issues are examined taking an interdis-
ciplinary approach. It contains the analysis of
effects on low-voltage systems or changes in
power plant dispatch and extensions, the es-
timation of load-shifting potentials through de-
mand-side management activities, for example
through delayed charging processes of electric
vehicles, as well as further issues in the context
of electric mobility.
